Xfinity Email Settings or Comcast? What do I need?

When setting up your email account in your email client, you might be confused: Do you need to utilize the Xfinity email settings? Or your Comcast email settings?

The quick answer: You can use both! If you wish to look up the current comcast email settings, have a look at the current comcast email settings here. But if you're unsure, you can simply use the Xfinity settings provided below, they work for email accounts branded as Comcast AND Xfinity!

So why the confusion? Xfinity is the brand name used for all Comcast products. Since 2010, Comcast Digital Cable became Xfinity TV, Comcast Internet became Xfinity Internet and so on. The rebranding was characterized by the media as an effort to eliminate the negative brand image that was associated with Comcast. Therefore, when setting up your email account, it doesn't matter if your email account is branded as Comcast or Xfinity.

Simply utilize the IMAP, SMTP and POP Xfinity email settings and you're good to go!

Easy Email Configuration: Xfinity Email Settings for IMAP

How to Turn on Access for Third-Party Programs:

  1. Log in to your Xfinity account using your Xfinity ID and password.
  2. Click on the Gear icon on the top right of your screen.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. In the section Third Party Access Securityuncheck the box to allow your email client or email migration tool to access your data.

That's it! Now you only need to add your Xfinity account to the desired software by using the IMAP settings below:

Xfinity Email Settings: Incoming Emails via IMAP

Use the following Xfinity email settings to add your Xfinity email address to your email software using IMAP (recommended):

IMAP Serverimap.comcast.net
IMAP Port993
IMAP SecuritySSL
Username Your Xfinity email address
Password Your Xfinity password

Xfinity Email Settings: SMTP

To be able to send emails using your Xfinity address, add the following Xfinity email settings in the section for "outgoing email" in your email client (e.g. Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird…):

SMTP Serversmtp.comcast.net
SMTP Port465 or 587 for TLS (use SSL if TLS isn't shown)
SMTP SecurityTLS or SLL
Username Your Xfinity email address
Password Your Xfinity password

Xfinity Email Settings for POP3

Opting for POP3 rather than IMAP to set up your Xfinity email account in your email client? Here are the Xfinity email settings for POP3:

POP Serverpop3.comcast.net
POP Port995
POP SecuritySSL
Username Your Xfinity email address
Password Your Xfinity password

What is the difference between POP3 and IMAP?

When setting up your Xfinity email, one decision you need to make is whether to use IMAP or POP for incoming emails.

If you opt for IMAP, any modifications you make to your emails (such as deletions or marking them as read) will be synchronized across all the devices you use to access your email. On the other hand, with POP, changes will only be reflected on the device where you initially downloaded the messages. When adding your Xfinity email settings to your email client, it’s essential to consider your personal needs and preferences to determine which protocol best suits you.

A general advise is to choose IMAP over POP, as it allows you to access the same emails on multiple devices like smartphones, tablets, and PCs. However, if you have a large mailbox and need to conserve storage capacity, POP becomes the preferable option. With POP, emails are downloaded to your device, freeing up storage space in your mailbox.

But keep in mind: When using POP, your emails will be downloaded to your device. So if your device gets lost, stolen or breaks, you very likely won't be able to recover your email data!
