How to Set Up an App Password for Your Virgin Media Email Account
If you wish to add your Virgin Media email address to any email software (e.g. an email client like Outlook or Apple Mail or an email migration software like MailJerry), you can't simply use your email account password. Instead, you need to generate an app password that you use instead of your regular account password. Sounds complicated? No worries, simply follow these few steps:
How to Create a Virgin Media App Password:
- Sign in to My Virgin Media
- Go to Account Settings and click on Account details
- Under Virgin Media Mail, click on the "manage" button next to Virgin Media Mail App Password.
- On this page, click on Generate to create a new app password.
➡️ Copy your app password and use it for any email software instead of your regular email account password!
Virgin Media Email Settings with App Password:
Now that you've created your app password, you can simply add your Virgin Media email address to any email software. You can choose between IMAP and POP as email protocols for incoming emails and add the Virgin Media SMTP setting stated below to be able to send emails as well.
Virgin Media Email Settings for IMAP
In the section for "incoming emails" or to perform an email migration using MailJerry, simply add these IMAP settings to your email software:
IMAP Server | imap.virginmedia.com |
IMAP Port | 993 |
IMAP Security | SSL |
Username | Your Virgin Media email address |
Password | Your Virgin Media app password |
Virgin Media Email Settings for SMTP
Since IMAP is used to receive emails, you also need to add these SMTP settings to any email software you wish to use to send emails:
SMTP Server | smtp.virginmedia.com |
SMTP Port | 465 |
SMTP Security | SSL |
Username | Your Virgin Media email address |
Password | Your Virgin Media app password |

Username | Your Virgin Media email address |
Password | Your Virgin Media app password |
POP3 or IMAP, what is better?
Short answer: Usually, it's IMAP. When using the IMAP protocol, your emails remain on the Virgin Media servers, which has multiple advantages:
- You can read your emails on multiple devices (PC, smart phone, tablet…).
- If you loose your device, your emails are still stored on the Virgin mail servers.
- The status of your emails (read, marked, deleted) is synced across all devices.
So are there any reasons to use POP3?
Actually, there is one big advantage: When using POP3, your emails are deleted rom the Virgin mail servers, which frees up storage space.
Rule of thumb: If you run out of storage capacity in your Virgin mailbox, use POP3. But make sure to have a backup of your device up an running. In all other cases, IMAP is the preferable option.
