STRATO is a German internet hosting provider situated in Berlin that has been providing web hosting services since 1997. Initially focused on the German market, STRATO has expanded into multiple international markets in the last couple of years. Today, STRATOs products available in multiple countries, from the Netherlands to France.

STRATO offers all services you might expect from a large hosting provider, like website hosting, servers and cloud computing solutions and – of course – domain and email services.

So in case you're owning a STRATO email address and might be wondering how to add this email address to any email software, we've got all settings required for different scenarios listed below.

How to Set Up Your STRATO Email Address:

To easily add your STRATO email address to your email client, simply select your preferred email protocol (in most cases: IMAP to receive emails, SMTP to send emails) from the sections below. Add these settings to your email software and you're good to go.

STRATO IMAP Settings to Receive Emails

To be able to receive emails using your STRATO email account, add these IMAP settings to your email software (recommended).

Instead of IMAP, you can also use POP3 to receive emails (differences explained below).

What's better? POP3 or IMAP?

That's an answer that depends on how you wish to use your email account and the accumulated file size of your emails.

The IMAP protocol keeps your emails stored on the STRATO email servers. This means that you can access your emails from multiple devices. But do be able to do so, you need to have a working internet connection.

POP3 downloads your email to the device you use to initially read the email with. Depending on your mailbox configuration, the email is deleted from the STRATO mail servers after the initial download. This means that you can't open the same email on multiple devices, but save storage capacity in your STRATO account.

Since most users wish to read their emails on multiple devices, IMAP is – in general – the better option. However, if you run out of storage capacity in your STRATO email account, you might consider using POP3 to free up some storage. But heads up: If you decide to do so, make sure to regularly backup your device, as there might be no backup of your messages on the STRATO servers.
