Why use charter.net for your Spectrum email account?

When looking for the current Spectrum mail settings, you're most probably stumbling upon one information: Use charter.net for your Spectrum email account. But is this information legit? And should you actually use that server address for your Spectrum emails?

Spectrum is a brand that is owned by Charter Communications, an American telecommunications company. Under the brand name "Spectrum", Charter provides digital services to its customers, including email. Even though the company provides email accounts under both brand names, Charter and Spectrum, all email accounts rely on the same server infrastructure. That's why you have to use the chaterter.net mail server address for your Spectrum email accounts.

POP3 or IMAP: What should I use for my Spectrum email?

In general, it's best to use IMAP instead of POP3. Here's why:

With IMAP, your emails are still stored on the Spectrum mail servers, which allows you to open the same email on multiple devices. When reading an email on one device, the changes made to this email (e.g. marking it as read) are synced across all devices. Furthermore, if you loose your device, your emails are still stored on the Spectrum servers, so you don't need to worry about a local email backup.

But are there any reason to opt for POP3? There are two main scenarios that could make POP3 a favourable choice:

Since emails are downloaded to your device when using POP3, you can easily access your emails, even if you're offline. Furthermore, when running out of storage space in your Spectrum account, using POP3 can free up storage space, as emails are downloaded to your device and deleted from your Spectrum account.

⚠️ If you – for whatever reason – opt for POP3, make sure to have a backup of your local device up and running! Otherwise, your emails would be lost if the device containing your emails is lost or broken.
