Instead of IMAP, you can also use POP for incoming emails (scroll down to learn the difference between POP and IMAP as well as it's advantages and disadvantages).
However, POP is disabled by default on Microsoft's servers, so you need to enable POP before you can use it with your outlook.com account:
How to enable POP for outlook.com:
- Login to outlook.com and click on the Settings-Icon.
- Now click on Mail and select Sync email
- In the section Pop and IMAP, switch the option Let devices and apps use POP to YES.
- Click on Save to confirm your changes.
Now you can access your outlook.com account using POP:
POP Server | outlook.office365.com |
POP Port | 995 |
POP Security | TLS |
Username | Your outlook.com email address |
Password | Your Microsoft account password |
What is the difference between POP3 and IMAP?
When setting up your outlook.com email address, you can choose to use POP or IMAP for incoming emails.
Using IMAP for Incoming Emails:
- all changes made to an email (read it, delete it…) will be synchronised across all devices you're using the email address with (e.g. PC, tablet, smartphone…)
- emails are stored on Microsoft's mail servers
- if you loose your device, you're emails are still available
Using POP for Incoming Emails:
- the emails are downloaded to your device
- if you loose your device, your emails are lost (if you don't have a backup)
POP saves disk space on the mail server, so you don't run out of storage capacity in your mailbox
➡️ For most use cases, IMAP is the better option as it gives you a lot of flexibility combined with the security that you don't have to worry about data loss. For very large mailboxes, however, POP could be a considerable option.
