POP3 or IMAP: What should I use for my Namecheap email?
When adding your namecheap email account to your email software, you can choose between the POP3 and IMAP protocol in order to receive emails. But what are the differences?
IMAP is the more advanced and popular email protocol: Any changes made to your emails are synchronized across all devices you use to access your email. With POP3, this is only possible with advanced configuration.
POP3 is the preferred protocol when you need to save storage capacity on your mailbox (e.g. because you're running out of storage). But be careful: When using POP3, your emails will be downloaded to your device and deleted from the server (if not configured otherwise). This means: Loosing the device you downloaded your message to also means loosing this message forever!
General rule of thumb: If unsure, it's best to use IMAP. Should you consider using POP3 instead, have a look at this article that explains the differences, pros and cons of POP3 in detail.
