Reasons to
Migrate from Gmail to Gmail
In today’s digital world, it’s quite common to change email providers: Plans, pricing, storage capacity and features are constantly changing, giving many users a good reason to consider alternative email solutions and perform an email migration from time to time. But migrating from Gmail to Gmail? Performing a migration only to stay with the same email company? Does this make sense?
In fact, even if it seems illogical at first, there can be good reasons why you might want to migrate from your old Gmail account to another Gmail. Here are a few examples:
- Account Consolidation:
You’re owning multiple Gmail accounts and wish to consolidate your data in one single, more organised place. - Username preferences:
Remember the time when it was cool to have a “fancy” nick name like “coolkid_atlanta1981@gmail.com”? Well, in a more professional setting, this cool kid might not seem so cool anymore and therefore need to migrate to a new, more professional sounding Gmail address. - Name change:
Due to marriage, legal name change, or other personal reasons, your old email address might be outdated and needs to be changed. - Organisational changes:
Many new founder start their business using their private Gmail address. As soon as the business grows, it can get necessary to split your professional and private life into separate accounts. Or do you really want your employees to read auntie Beth’s yearly Christmas greetings including old pictures of you as a kid? (Yup, we all have these “loving” relatives… winking face ). - Spam and account clutter:
Once upon a time, there was a brand new, empty inbox. But after some months or years of usage, you’ve simply signed up with too many services, newsletters and successfully spread your email address across the world wide web. Now, all that’s left in your inbox is spam or even worse, meaning those super-annoying cold acquisition emails (Thank you, LinkedIn!). When your account has gone down the drain and even services like “Leave Me Alone” can’t help to declutter your inbox anymore, it might be time to switch to a new Gmail account.
➡️ So if you’re satisfied with what Gmail has to offer and simply want to move to a new / another account, it makes perfectly sense to migrate from Gmail to Gmail. Therefore, let’s find out how to do so!

FAQ
Does MailJerry migrate the labels from my old to my new Gmail account?
Yes! MailJerry automatically creates all labels in your new account that are available in your old account and assigns them to the respective emails.
How can I migrate my contacts and calendars to my new Gmail account?
To migrate your contacts from Gmail to Gmail, follow this tutorial up until step 5. Instead of “Outlook CSV”, select “Google CSV” and import the CSV file into your new Gmail account.
For your existing calendars, export your Google calendars as described in this tutorial and import the exported data into your new Gmail account.
How long does it take to migrate X GB of data from Gmail to Gmail?
This depends on how much data you wish to migrate. After a certain amount of data volume was migarted, Google applies bandwidth limits to your accounts. This means that your migration runs slower after you hit these limits (current limits: 2500 MB download and 500 MB upload per day).
But don’t worry: Don’t stop the migration, but wait until your migration finished. It’s absolutely now problem for a migration to run longer than 24h or even a couple of days. Simply close MailJerry, work with your old account as usual and enable the auto sync as soon as your migration finished.
I’m in a hurry. Is there anything I can do to speed up the migration?
Yes. If you’re in a hurry, enable the option “Ignore Google Bandwidth Limits” when connecting your accounts. By activating this option, MailJerry will ignore Google’s limits and try to migrate your data as fast as possible.
Only downside: When doing so, it might happen that Google cuts the connection to your accounts after some time. If this is the case, MailJerry will show an error. But don’t worry, in case you were cut from your accounts, stop the current migration and start a new one. All data that was already migrated to your new Gmail account will be skipped, so you don’t loose any progress you made so far!
Can I work with my new or old Gmail account while the migration is still running?
Yes. During the migration, you can use your old Gmail account as usual (receive, write and send emails). After the migration finished, simply enable the auto-sync so that the changes made to your inbox during the migration are also reflected in your new account.
Can I change folders / labels while my migration is still running?
That’s actually not recommended. It’s no problem at all to write and send emails and add labels to emails that you received after starting the migration. However, restructuring your emails and labels during the migration can cause duplicates. Therefore, we’d recommend that you a) first clean your old mailbox and then migrate your emails or b) migrate your emails and sweep the broom after the migration finished.
