Last verified: Jul 2025

Is Lycos Email Still Available?

Back in the days (or better: the last century), Lycos used to be a household name. What originally started as a search engine back in 1995 quickly became a global brand. Besides search, Lycos offered various internet service, such as chat or the extremely popular free email service. Fas forward to 2018: Google became a global player, dominating the field and making it hard for Lycos to protect their market share. As a result, Lycos decided to shut down all free email accounts and is now only providing payed email addresses.

What does this mean for your account?
If you'd like to access your old, free Lycos email account nowadays, there's bad news: Access via IMAP or POP was dismissed years ago. Therefore, you can't access your emails anymore. However, access for payed accounts is still available.

➡️ So if you're a paying user of the Lycos email service, simply scroll down below to find the current Lycos email settings!

Should I use POP or IMAP to receive emails?

To receive emails in your email software, you can choose between two different protocols: IMAP and POP.

When best to opt for IMAP:
In most cases, it's best to use IMAP to receive emails from your Lycos email address. With IMAP, your messages are stored on the Lycos server, which means that you can read your messages on multiple devices. Furthermore, changes are synchronized across all devices. So if you read a message on your mobile, it's automatically marked as read on all other devices, too.

When best to choose POP:
When opting for POP, your emails are fetched from the Lycos servers, downloaded to your device, and – depending on the server configuration – deleted from the mail server. This frees up storage capacity in your Lycos mail account. Therefore, POP is a good option if you run out of storage. But be aware that POP makes it hard to use your email address on multiple devices and that you have to backup your device regularly. Otherwise, your emails will be lost in case you loose or break the device that contains your emails.
