Freenet.de – Email and News in One Place
Freenet.de is a well-known German telecommunications and web services provider with a long-standing presence in the digital market. Originally a subsidiary of Mobilcom, Freenet has grown into a trusted brand offering email, domain, and hosting solutions for both private and business users. Customers can choose between various Freenet Mail packages — from free basic accounts to premium options with additional storage, ad-free access, and advanced security features.
What makes Freenet.de stand out is its dual nature: in addition to its email and hosting services, it also runs one of Germany’s popular online news and lifestyle portals under the same domain, providing users with daily updates on politics, sports, entertainment, and technology.

POP3 or IMAP: Which Works Best for Your Freenet.de Email?
When setting up your Freenet.de email in your email client, you can choose between IMAP and POP3 for receiving messages. Each method handles your emails differently, and the right choice depends on how you wish to access and use your mailbox.
IMAP keeps your emails synchronized across all devices. Any action (e.g. reading, deleting, or moving a message) is reflected on every device connected to your Freenet.de account. This is great if you check your emails on multiple devices such as a smartphone, tablet, and computer.
POP3, in contrast, downloads emails to a single device and can remove them from the server (depending on your settings). This helps save server storage and is useful if you mainly use one device to manage your emails.
If you want to access the same emails from anywhere, IMAP is usually the better option. If you prefer storing emails locally or need to reduce server usage, POP3 may suit you better.
⚠️ When opting for POP, please make sure to backup your emails regulary and keep in mind that Freenet does not recommend to use POP for your account!
