HostGator: How to add Your Email to your Email Client?
HostGator, a hosting provider based in Texas (US), is well known for its shared virtual private servers, dedicated web hosting and especially it's very popular WordPress Hosting. With a solid track record, great money-for-value offerings and efficient security features (such as malware scanning), HostGator is a popular hosting provider for business, web design agencies and private individuals alike.
However, given the wide range of products HostGator offers, one thing is significantly harder compared to other email providers: Finding the right server address which you need to add to your email to your email client or migrating your emails form or to HostGator.
➡️ Therefore, have a look at this tutorial that explains how to easily find the correct HostGator email settings!
How to Find Your HostGator Email Settings
To be able to add your HostGator email address to your email client or to migrate your emails from or to HostGator, you first need to find your server addres.
How do I find my HostGator Server Address?
To find your HostGator server address, refer to your welcome email or log into the HostGator Customer Portal:
- In the customer portal, click on Hosting in the left sidebar.
- If you have only on hosting package, click on Quick Links, otherwise, select the corresponding package and click on Manage.
- In the section Quick Links, click on Cpanel.
- In cPanel, click on General Information on the right side.
- Now click on Server Information.
Here, you'll see your servername (e.g. gator1234). Simply add hostgator.com to this name and you've found your IMAP / POP3 / SMTP server address.
Example: gator1234.hostgator.com
➡️ When using a custom domain (e.g. mydomain.com), simply use mail.mydomain.com as server address!

POP Port | 995 (for SSL), 110 (for Non-SSL) |
POP Security | SSL/TLS or Non-SSL |

POP3 or IMAP: What should I use for my HostGator email?
When configuring your HostGator email, one decision you'll need to make is whether to use IMAP or POP for incoming emails.
With IMAP, any changes made to your emails (such as deletions or marking them as read) are synchronized across all devices you use to access your email. POP, on the other hand, reflects changes only on the device where you initially downloaded the messages.
In general, it's advisable to choose IMAP over POP as it allows you to access the same emails on multiple devices AND is more secure since you can't loose your emails as easily (think of crashed hard drives or lost / defect devices). However, if you prioritize storage conservation for a large mailbox, POP is the preferable option. With POP, emails are downloaded to your device, freeing up storage space in your mailbox.
