Add Your Fastmail Email Address to Any Email Software
Do you have an email account from Fastmail, the Australian email hosting company? In this case, you might want to add your Fastmail email address to your favourite email client (such as Apple Mail, Outlook or alike). Or, in case you're not satisfied with Fastmail, perhaps you'd like to migrate your email data to another provider?
This very common task is not as easy as it might seem when using a Fastmail email account. Since Fastmail is very strict converning it's security settings, it can be quite tricky to guess the right combination of protocols. Therefore, simply scroll below to find the right settings for your use case. Furthermore, we've provided a short tutorial on how to set up an app password, so you can perform your task without having to consult further help pages!
How to Set Up Your Fastmail Email Address using IMAP & App Passwords
Simply add your Fastmail IMAP settings to your email client and you're good to go? Unfortunately, that's not enough. For third-party applications such as email clients (or an email migration software), you first need to generate an app password for your Fastmail account.
How to Generate an App Password for Fastmail:
Follow these steps to generate an app password for your Fastmail account:
- Log into the Fastmail web interface and go to Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Open the Integrations tab at the top of the screen.
- Click on New App Password.
- Authenticate using your account password and click on Continue.
- Enter a name of your app (e.g. "MailJerry" when using for your email migration).
- Stick with the default settings when being asked which data your app should be able to access.
- Now click on Generate Password.
➡️ Copy this password and use it in combination with the IMAP, SMTP and POP settings listed below!

What is the difference between POP3 and IMAP?
When setting up your Fastmail email address, you have to choose between two protocols for incoming emails: IMAP or POP.
If you opt for IMAP, any modifications you make to your emails (delete, read, move into another folder…) will be synchronized across all devices you use your email address on (e.g. tablet, PC, phone).
With POP, changes will only be reflected on the device where you initially downloaded the messages. So you won't see these changes on the other devices.
➡️ A general advise is to choose IMAP over POP, as it allows you to seamlessly work with your email address on multiple devices. However, if you have a large mailbox and run out of storage, POP becomes the better option, since emails are downloaded to your device, freeing up disc space.
⚠️ When opting for POP, make sure that you regularly backup your device. Otherwise, you'll loose your emails if something happens to the device you downloaded your emails to.
